Hayfield vs. West Potomac - Wolverines no huddle offense gives Hawks a BIG headache!
The Hawks were holding their own against an excellent West Potomac squad until midway in the first quarter when, unfortunately, a pass defender fell leaving an opposing receiver wide open for a TD. Moments later, an apparent forward pass by the Hawks QB was ruled a fumble with the Wolverines recovering at the Hawks two yard line; West Potomac capitalized two plays later scoring on a short pass. These two crushing plays sent the Hawks reeling and unable to recover.
These two old rivals met once again with the Wolverines getting the best of the Hawks this evening, 40-7. The Wolverines no-huddle spread offense created match up problems for Hayfield. For Hayfield to be competitive, the offense must make plays and put points on the board. There were plenty of penalties in this game with the Hawks seeming to get the most costly ones, particularly on offense. Two-way players and depth are an issue again as the team reaches the halfway mark.
(L. to R.) Junior DB Nathan Joyce (#23) in pursuit of a WestPo ball-carrier. Competitive Sophomore QB Anton McCallum (#1) continues to learn valuable experience but must get help from his backfield and wide receivers (dropped balls with the potential for big plays have hurt the Hawks); opposing defenses are keying on him. McCallum connected with Junior WR Michael Ande (#88) for a 25 yard TD pass, the only score for the Hawks. Ian Gray kicks the extra point. Senior DE Kyle Cotton (#66) faced-off against one of the Metropolitan area finest offensive lineman. Hawks defenders bring down a ball-carrier for a loss. Offensive lineman Ben Huber (#64). Sophomore DB Justin Jefferson (#10). The going was tough for Sophomore RB Nazrul Islam (#26). Islam came close to breaking a couple of long runs and is on the verge of a having a breakout game.
