Hawks Hang Tough at Annandale, lose 42-19!
In a losing effort, Sophomores provided a spark on offense! Kudos to the offensive line for a fine effort. Mental lapses on defense haunts Hawks again.
The score is not indicative of how close this game was (score was 28-19 Annandale with 5:30 left in the game) between these district rivals as the Atoms scored two very late 4th quarter TD's, including a 25 yard recovered fumble. With many of the players seeing duty on both sides of the ball, the defense is under a lot of pressure. One critical play in the contest occurred with three seconds left in the first half; with the Hawks sideline calling for an obvious hold on a defensive lineman, the Atoms scored a TD on a busted play by completing a pass. With the score 21-13 in favor of Annandale, Hayfield opened the third quarter with a sustained drive reaching the Annandale two yard line. The Hawks were then called for illegal procedure, pushing them back to the seven yard line. After three running plays and with the ball at the three yard line, Sophomore QB Anton McCallum (#1) was tripped as he rolled out to his left on fourth down, a huge defensive stand for the Atoms. McCallum was impressive running and passing the ball; Nazrul Islam (#26) was simply electrifying on the evening as he seemed to glide and cut across the grain making defenders miss after making receptions. Upcoming game: Hawks travel are on the road next Saturday to play TC Williams (@ Episcopal H.S., Alexandria; game time 2 PM.
(L. to R.) Senior RB (and LB) Collins Asomapong (#11) provided the Hawks with a physical presence at the running back position coming up with a number of first downs. Somewhere in this pile is QB Anton McCallum, scoring the Hawks first TD of the evening behind an excellent offensive line surge. An Atoms OL has a hold of Hawks DL Corey Mack (#75). Hawks defenders close in on an atoms ball-carrier. Hawks were knocking "a the door" threatening to tie the score midway thorugh the third quarter before a penalty and fine defensive effort by the Atoms halted the scoring threat. Sophomore Nazrul Islam had a break-out game for the Hawks catching 10 passes for 150 yards and two TDs. McCallum figured in all of Hayfield's scores; he completed 15 of 25 passes for about 210 yards on the evening and rushed for another 35 yards. Sophomore Rashaud Westbrook (#5) caught four passed for forty yards including one terrific reception on the sidelines in the first quarter. Rashaud also played the entire game on the defensive side at CB and outside LB. Members of the offensive line ( Sr. Ben Huber #64, Jr. Taylor Kewer, Sr. Nati Adamu (#74) and Soph James Sherril (#67) take a well deserved break. Coach Roy Hill offers moral encouragement to the beleaguered Hawks defense in the fourth quarter. The left side of the OL Huber and Kyle Cotton (#66). Soph. LB Alex Merino (#52).
