The
Regular Season
Young
and Hungry!
(Current
through 2 February 2005)
This year's team is probably the youngest team
the Hawks have fielded in recent memory. Although it is led
by two experienced seniors -- 103 pounder Chris
Hummer and 215 pounder Phil
Tassi, there are only three other returning starters:
juniors Jonahan Romero and
Calvin Cardillo, and sophomore
Ryan Barrington. The
rest of the starting line-up is likely to include only four
juniors and a senior (with no varsity experience), with two
sophomores and three freshmen filling out the line-up.
December 4, 2004: the Robinson Duals
The Hawks first event of the season was a dual
tournament at district rival Robinson Secondary School. Hayfield
brought 18 wrestlers to compete. For eleven of them, it would
be their first varsity match! The Hawks won their pool by
handily beating Colonial Forge B 59
- 12, JEB Stuart 66 - 9,
and Herndon 40 -29. In the
final match, to determine which team would be the tournament
champion, Hayfield lost to Langley
40 - 30.
Four of the Hawks were undefeated. Notable performances
were by freshman Steven Ours
at 140 pounds, who had three pins and a major decision; and
by senior 215 pounder Phil Tassi, who wrestled at heavy weight
and had three pins in his four wins. For those who this was
their first varsity event: junior Chris
McIntosh started his varsity career with 3 wins, while
junior Alan Kwong at 103
pounds had a pair of pins along with sophomore Zachary
Grimsley at 160 pounds; freshman Jonathan
Burnham won his first two matches.
December 10 - 11, 2004: The Carlisle Holiday
Tournament
The second weekend in December saw the Hawks on the first
of many road trips they will take this season. They headed
north to Pennsylvania, where they participated in the Carlisle
Holiday Tournament. The Hawks finished eighth out of 16 teams,
with five wrestlers finishing in the top four of their weight
class:
189 Pounder, Junior Calvin
Cardillo, who won his weight class with a 4 - 0 record!
112 Pounder, Senior Chris
Hummer, who took second with 3 wins and one loss.
140 Pounder, Freshman Steven
Ours, who was third with 5 wins and a loss.
145 Pounder, Junior Corey
Monaghan, who took fourth with a 4 - 2 record.
215 Pounder, Senior Phil Tassi,
who also placed fourth with a .500 record of 2 wins and
2 losses.
December 17 - 18, 2004: Fort Mill S.C. "Outback Classic"
"Dazed and Confused"
By Chris McIntosh (sidelined
with injury)
The Hawks made the 6 hour trip down to Fort Mill South Carolina
to compete in the Outback Classic, a round robin tournament.
The 1st night was a trying night for the hawks with only 3
winning their 1st and 2nd Round matches, and only 3 others
picking up a win. Junior Jonahan
Romero picked up 2 wins at 130 pounds with a major decision
and a pin. Sophomore Ryan
Barrington, who had been sidelined for weight issues,
came out with a vengence, picking up 2 wins by tech fall at
135 pounds. Junior Corey Monaghan
picked up his win with a pin. The other Hawks winning that
evening were: Alan Kwong
at 103 with a major decision, freshman Daniel "Alaska" Mills
at 152 with a tech fall, and junior Calvin
Cardillo win a pin at 189.
Day 2 saw an improvement with several of the Hawks stepping
up, but unfortunatly for some hawks it was too late. Only
5 Hawks made it out of the round robin and into the semi-finals:
Kwong, Romero, Barrington, Monaghan, and Cardillo. Romero
and Barrington both advanced to the Championship Finals. While
Kwong, Monaghan, and Cardillo would wrestle for 3rd. Romero
and Barrington came in 2nd. Romero lost by a 7-8 decision
and Barrington lost 5-0. Monaghan and Cardillo both took 3rd.
Corey Monaghan picked up wrestler of the week with his strong
performance. Hayfields next Tournament Is The
Clash III which is also known as the National High School
Duals) in Rochester, Minnesota, on December 30 - 31
On the Road Again: the 2004 National High School Duals
30 - 31 December
The team hit the road again for a 800 mile trip to Rochester,
Minnesota to participate in the 2004 National High School
Duals -- better known as the Clash. There they met some of
the best teams in the Midwest. The Hawks had their hands full
wrestling numerous nationally and state ranked wrestlers.
Furthermore, they were handicapped going into the meets having
to forfeit up two weight classes (119 and 275). The first
match was against 12th ranked in the Nation Owatonna, Minnesota
which inflicted upon the Hawks their worse defeat ever: Owatonna
75 - Hayfield 3
The team's performance improved somewhat against the defending
South Dakota Single A state championship team, however the
Hawks still lost: Winner 52 -
Hayfield 21. The Hawks continued to narrow the gaps in
the scores, but still losses to Omaha Gross Catholic (3rd
in the State) Gross Catholic 47
- Hayfield 25, Minot, ND 40
- Hayfield 30, and losing a close one to Rochester
Mayo, MN 33 - Hayfield 31. The Hawks finished on a high
note, beating Higley, Arizona: Hayfield
43 - Higley, AZ 30.
The 2005 Battlefield Duals: 7 - 8 January
The Hawks got to stay off the road this weekend, with a rare
home event that they were co-hosting with Colonial Forge.
Although they enjoyed not having to travel, they were still
up against some of the most brutal competition they would
face all year - with a eight match dual tournament with teams
from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia. Once again,
the Hawks would forfeit a weight class -- this time 275 pounds.
On the first night, things started well with a victory against
a West Virginia team, Hayfield
52 - Buckhannon-Upshur 19; but they soon ran into a strong
Pennsylvannia team: Berwick
52 - Hayfield 20. The Hawks finished the evening with
a loss: Hanover 42 - Hayfield
32
The next morning, saw Hayfield facing Upper Perkiomen, Pennsylvania,
which finished 7th at the Beast of the East. Final score was:
Upper Perkiomen 70 - Hayfield
9. Hayfield lost its next two matches Liberty
40 - Hayfield 37 and Colonial
Forge 60 - Hayfield 10, but handily beat two Northern
Region rivals: Hayfield 40
- Westfield 29 and Hayfield
53 - TC Williams 18. Jonahan
Romero, who had strep throat and didn't know it, gave
the crowd a wild match against Westfield's Paul Grinups. Romero
was down 10 - 1 in the third period, but came back to win
it 16 - 10. Calvin Cardillo
went undefeated, with a 8 - 0 record, while Chris
Hummer won the Outstanding Wrestler Award.
Another Home Event: Double Dual 12 January
On 12 January, in something that was unprecedent in the team's
History, the Hawks hosted two consecutive home events, with
a double dual against T.C. Williams and Yorktown High Schools.
The team performed well with two victories: Hayfield
48 - Lake Braddock 19 and Hayfield
56 - Yorktown 18. The night saw the wrestling debut of
Senior Eric Brown, who filled
the gap at 275 pounds. Ten wrestlers went 2- 0, with the most
exciting match going to Freshman Jonathan
Burnham, who was down 6 - 1with 30 seconds left in the
match, to come back and win in overtime 8 - 6.
Once More on the Road -- Eastern States Classic 14 - 15
January
The day after winning their double dual at home, the Hawks
were on the road again -- heading to Sullivan Community College
in New York to compete in the Eastern States Classic. This
was an individual tournament, where the Hawks faced wrestlers
from New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Hayfield placed 22nd out of 42
teams, with Calvin Cardillo placing 3rd with a 5 - 1 record.
The Dual: Hayfield versus Robinson 20 January
Once again, those in the know, under-estimated the Hawks.
With four returning regional champions and a host of highly
ranked wrestlers, Robinson was too strong and Hayfield was
too weak. Robinson had the home crowd advantage and it was
Senior Night for many of the starters. The pundits said it
wasn't a matter of Robinson winning, but by how many points.
The meet started well for Robinson, with the Rams winning
the first three bouts and going ahead 12 - 0. The fourth bout
was supposed to be theirs at 125, with Greg Miller, who was
ranked 3rd in the Region, going against the Hawk's unranked
Chris McIntosh. In the
upset of the night, Chris McIntosh won 8 - 6! Team score was
now 3 - 12. Jonahan Romero
pinned Matt Hunt in 55 seconds, pulling the Hawks within three.
At 135 pounds, Ryan Barrington
majored Scott Rayburn 19 - 6, and the Hawks led by 13 - 12.
Steven Ours expanded the Hawks
lead to 19 - 12, with a pin over Wes Jerman in 2:51. A pin
by Robinson at 145, brought the score to 19 - 18, but Hayfield's
152 pounder, Zach Grimsley
added to the Hawks' lead, by pinning Nick Ovalle in 4:41.
With Hayfield leading 25 - 18, Robinson pinned at 160 and
171 and took a five point lead 30 - 25, going into 189. Calvin
Cardillo took his time and pinned Alex Rapphahn in 5:57
to give the Hawks a 31 - 30 point. Unfortunately for Hayfield,
Robinson's 215 pounder, Brent Jones, showed why he was ranked
number two in the nation, with a quick pin. Going into the
last round, Robinson led Hayfield 36 - 31. The only way Hayfield
could win was by a pin. Wrestling for Hayfield at heavyweight
was Eric Brown, a senior
who had wrestled only six matches in his life. Brown showed
he was up for the job by quickly pinning Greg Jernegan in
1:30, to give the Hawks the six points they needed to win
the meet! Final score was Hayfield
37, Robinson 36!
Double Dual: 26 January 2005
In the last regular home event of the season, the Hawks faced
two Patriot District opponents: T.C. Williams and Annandale.
They easily handled them, beating T.C.
Williams 53 - 13 and Annandale
44 - 29. Seven of the Hawks went 2 - 0, with Chris
McIntosh and Calvin Cardillo
pinning both of their opponents. Four of Hayfield's wrestlers
are 4 - 0 against Patriot District opponents: Chris McIntosh,
Ryan Barrington, Jonahan
Romero, and Calvin Cardillo.
A Busy Day: 29 January 2005
The Hawks Varsity B Team debut today, representing Hayfield
in the Hammer Tournament at Progressive Chrisitan Academy,
in Maryland. In addition to their host, they also met Patriot
District rivals Robinson Secondary School and top prep schools
Germantown Academy (Pennsylvania) and Peddie School of New
Jersey, along with Woodbridge High School. For two of the
wrestlers it was their first varsity meet: Tanious
Haddad (189 pounds) and Devin
Locke (145 pounds). Tanious had the toughest matches,
going against the number two ranked wrestler in the nation
and the number two ranked wrestler in Virginia.
Hayfield also participated in the Super Duals at Colonial
Forge, where they met some of the top teams in the state.
After losing to Great Bridge 66 -
0 and to Kellam 35 - 32,
they beat Grundy 42- 28, but
lost the final two meets against Gar-Field
47 - 24 and Mount Saint Joe's
51 - 24.
Quad: 2 February 2005
The Hawks finished their regular season with a quad at district
rival West Potomac. The Hawks lost their first match against
West Springfield 42 - 21, but
beat West Potomac 71 - 10, and
Lee 75 - 3. Hayfield finished
the season with a 15 - 16 dual meet record.
