Patriot District Tourney Semi Final -   Hawks are defeated by Annandale, 76-74!

Hayfield cannot overcome a very slow start.

The third meeting between these two teams is a charm for the Atoms who started the game on a 12 point run. The Hawks found themselves trailing by as many as 15 points in the second quarter before staging a comeback, led by the inside play of Senior Laurent Newsome, tying the game and even taking a short lead.  However, the Atoms would re-take the lead, stretching it at times to 8 or 9 points throughout  the game and fought-off all of our Hawks efforts the remainder of the game. In the end the Atoms executed and our Hawks came up a bit short. A number of Hawks did not appear to be at 100% but that does not take away anything from the Atoms excellent performance which moves them to the District Championship game. Our Hawks now have to travel for their first regional game, against a two or three seed from the Liberty District. This is not an easy task, but one that our talented Hawks are capable of fulfilling. GO HAWKS!

(L. to R.) Junior Brandon Winbush pushes the ball up-court. Senior TJ Wilson puts up a short jumper for two of his 16 points. Laurent Newsome and Tayron Gibson double-team an Atom's player.  Newsome was tough on both sides of the board and led Hayfield scorers with 18 points.  Gibson contributed 17 points. Chan Canady and a number of Hawks have been fighting a bug and hope to healthy for the start of Regional play.

With this victory over the wolverines, Junior Chad Canady and the Hawks move to the District semi-finals.

Hayfield plays tough on the road but comes up short at T.C. Williams, 61-55.

Although next week's district tournament seedings had been established, the teams went after each other as if it was the championship game. It looked liked the Titans had taken complete control of the game but  Hayfield bounced back  from an 11 point deficit in the third quarter, tying the game at 46 early in the fourth quarter. The game remained very close but in the end, it was the turnovers, and missed free throws which contributed to the disappointing loss.

Senior's Laurent Newsome and TJ Wilson contest a Titans shot.  The very physical Newsome made his presence known early and throughout the game, scoring 17 points, hauling down offensive and defensive rebounds and blocking a number of shots.

Junior Chad Canady is closely guarded by a Titans defender. Soph. Tayron Gibson (#23) pulls up for a jumper; the highly athletic Gibson provides Hayfield with energy and hustle on the court, all the time. TJ Wilsons goes up for a short jump shot. Whoops, you can't leave this Titan this open for a shot! Rayshwan Rigans is pressured by a Titan. Junior Brandon Winbush knocks down a field goal. Gibson is hemmed under the Hawks basket. Coach Palmer engages this official to obtain a clarification on a call against the Hawks.

Sluggish Hawks bounce back in second half, defeat Atoms 57 - 49!

Senior Laurent Newsome's excellent performance (scoring and rebounding) in the last few games, has provided the Hawks with a great lift. In spite of his aggressive play, Newsome has avoided foul trouble by playing disciplined ball; maintaining this level of play will be a huge plus come tournament time for the Hawks.

( L. to R.) For the second game in a row, Senior Laurent Newsome (#34) led all Hawks scorers, tallying 15 points against the Atoms. Newsome gets physical under the Hawks basket. Junior Brandon Winbush shoots and connects on a three pointer.  Good to see Junior Rayshawn Rigans back on the court again; Rigans and a number of Hawks are starting to get their legs back due to recent a of illnesses. (Note:  Could that be the reason why Hayfield was 15-34 from the charity line on the evening?) Senor Captain T. J. Wilson lays in two of his four points. Newsome goes up strong on this play. Steady Chad Canady (#35) hustles after a loose ball. Tayron Gibson drives in for two points.

Bruins buzzer beater downs Hawks, 41-39!

(L. to R.) Hayfield's standout Junior Chad Canady, forces the Bruins D. Morra to his left in the closing seconds of the game. Mr. Morra is arguably one of the top players in the region. Soph. Tayron Gibson shoots and connects from three point land.  The energetic Gibson provides the Hawks a physical presence. Soph. Guard Davonte Williams (#32) running the offense. Senior Laurent Newsome is called for a blocking foul on this play. Newsome was solid from the free throw line for the Hawks. Trailing by ten points midway through the third period, this dunk by TJ Wilson ignited a Hawks comeback.

Lake Braddock dictated the pace throughout the game, at times making our Hawks look sluggish and not in sync; the Bruins even took a 10 point lead midway through the third quarter before the Hawks got some energy back and rallied to tie the game.  With time winding down in the fourth, the Bruins held the ball for more than two minutes in their last possession. In this last possession, the Hawks defender did a terrific job against LB's top player, forcing him to take an off balance shot (it appeared that he took a few awkward steps); however, the ball rebounded directly to a Bruins player who made the layup at the buzzer. During LB's last possession, Hayfield had two fouls left before the bonus situation but opted to not to use them. Tough loss for the Hawks and congrats to the host team on a hard earned win.

After forcing a turnover, the Hawks are on their way to one of their few fast breaks on the evening.

In Overtime, Hayfield 68 - South County 64

Listless Hawks escape with the win!

Was it the heartbreaking overtime loss this past Wednesday or were the Hawks overconfident against a Stallions squad they comfortably handled in their earlier meeting? In any event, Hayfield came out flat and was simply out-played and at times out-hustled by a short handed but determined Stallions squad. After trailing at the end of the first quarter and most of the second, Hayfield appeared to be coming out of their funk by staging a late rally, tying the score at the half (24-24). During the second half the teams would exchange leads. It seemed that the Hawks just could not put the ball in the bucket from short range, repeatedly missing open shots. Hayfield's coaching staff tried every conceivable combination of players to jump start the Hawks and it appeared that Hayfield had finally gained control  very late in the fourth quarter, expanding their lead to seven points (55-48). But the determined Stallions would not go away. With 37 seconds left in the contest and the Hawks holding a six point lead, as well as possession of the ball, it sure looked like normalcy had been restored to the universe.

That's when the inexplicable occurred to an experienced team; to the shock of the Hayfield faithful and coaching staff (and the delight of Stallions fans), the Hawks turned the ball over (one was a very questionable traveling call) three times with the Stallions converting all three possession tying the game at 55, pushing the contest into overtime. During OT, our Hawks settled down playing well down the stretch, converting the necessary free-throws to take a nine point lead with 30 seconds left in the period. The Stallions connected on a last second three pointer making the final score 68-64. Congratulations to our Hawks for pulling out this very difficult win and to the Stallions players and coaches who played their hearts out seeking the upset. There is always a chance that Hayfield could meet the Stallions in District Tournament, and if that were to happen our Hawks will have to bring their A game.

(L. to R.) Junior Chad Canady is called for an offensive foul on this play during the first quarter. Senior T.J. Wilson attempts takes a short jumper. Junior Brandon Winbush; Winbush scored 20 points on the evening to lead the Hawks. Junior Sean Michael King (#42) and Chad Canaday put pressure on a Stallions ball-handler. Senior Laurent Newsome (#34) wins the overtime tip-off. Soph. Tayron Gibson (#23) hauls down a big rebound in OT. Stallions CJ Rector connects shoots from three point land. Newsome is boxed out by South County's Jamel Gonzalez (#14); Gonzalez had an excellent all around game and led the Stallions with 15 points.

In Overtime, Titans topple Hawks 71-66!

Hayfield overcomes third and fourth quarter miscues, storming back to tie the game (at 60) when Junior Rayshawn Rigans made a lay up with three seconds left in regulation.  The Hawks misfired on good chances in the overtime period and saw the Titans convert key free-throws to seal the win. Junior Chad Canady's led the Hawks with 28 points!

Hayfield coasts past  West Potomac,  71-47!

Wilson's 32 points lifts Hawks over the visiting Wolverines!

Team jumps out to an early 10-0 lead and never looks back.  Gamely Wolverines got as close as ten points midway through the third quarter before the Hawks stretched their lead between 15 and 20 points the remainder of the contest.  Another solid outing for Soph. forward Tayron Gibson (14 points and some serious rebounding).  Next Wednesday evening our Hawks will host the T.C. Williams Titans.  Both teams have not lost a game in the Patriot District so far this year.  This has all the makings of a terrific game between two old rival.  Hawks fans!  Come out next Wednesday evening and support your team against the defending state champions!  GO HAWKS!

Senior G/F T.J. Wilson treated the Hawks faithful to some aerial acrobatics!

Hayfield 62 - Annandale 45

Hayfield jumped out to a nine point lead in the first quarter and appeared to be on cruise mode; however, due to a number of  missed shots (particularly lay ups) in the second quarter saw the Atoms cut the lead to four points at intermission.  The young Atoms squad came out fired up and managed to tie the game at 33 midway in the third period. It was then that the Hawks started to run their offense, gained the momentum back and led at the end of the period, 42-35. The fourth quarter belonged to the Hawks as they continued to extend the lead over the host Atoms.  Tayron Gibson (16 points and numerous offense and defensive rebounds) was terrific for the Hawks. T. J. Wilson added 18 points and Mr. Steady, Chad Canady, added 13.

T.J Wilson cleanly blocks a shot in the first quarter. Wilson and Tayron Gibson double-team an Atoms ball-handler. Wilson and Gibson led all Hayfield scorers with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Wilson at the free-throw line. Point guard Rayshawn Rigans helped break the Annandale press. Chad Canady at the charity line here contributed 13 points for the Hawk.

Patriot District - In a fast paced game, Hawks win first round of the Parkway battle over Lee, 82-69!

Junior Brandon Winbush leads a Hawks fast-break. Winbush finished the night with twenty points including four long range three pointers! T.J. Wilson slams down two of his game leading 28 points. Hayfield led by a significant margin most of the game (at one time leading by as many as 19 points in the third quarter).  Behind some hot shooting, and their fans urging them on, Lee crawled back to within nine points midway in the fourth period.  However, the Hawks kept their composure and matched Lee's scores in kind to preserve the win.  (Note: A BIG hello to Mrs. Winbush who is stationed overseas and to all member of the armed forces.)

(L. to R.) Soph. Tayron Gibson hauls down an offensive rebound and follows it up with a layup.  Juniors Brandon Winbush and Chad Canady go up for a rebound. Senior T.J. Wilson is fouled. Wilson soars and slams down two more points (yes, men can fly and Wilson proves it).  Check out the contrast in hair fashion/styles between Lee's head coach and the players on the court. Canady gets sandwiched by a couple of Lancers.  Canady played his usual steady and reliable game ending up with16 points. The game became very physical as the Lancers attempted to come back from a large deficit. Sean Michael King (#42) provided quality minutes off the bench. Winbush and the referee are in agreement...go that way! Gibson seems to be always on the ball and mixing it up! Hawks students cheer their team on! Old, very young and young Hawks! Junior Rayshawn Rigans closely guards a Lancer ball-handler. Hawks defense is about to trap an unsuspecting Lancer. Under the watchful eye of Rigans, Laurent Newsome goes up high to snare a rebound. The intensity of the game is obvious as both teams mix it up for a rebound. Wilson displays his intensity and emotions.

Holidays Blues!

Hawks dropped games against East Lake (CA) and the Fairfax Rebels in the Holiday Invitation tournament at Mt. Vernon before downing Marshall.  Due to travel, a family emergency and a suspension (as a result of a technical foul in a previous contest), Hayfield had to re-adjust their lineups during the tournament.

In Fairfax, Hawks down Rebels 72-59!

A Ten point run at the end of the second quarter put Hayfield in control of what had been a very tight game. After a terrific effort in the first half, The Rebels could not solve the Hawks pressure defense in the second as Hayfield increased their lead and coasted to their 7th win.

(L. to R.) Junior Sean Michael King (#42) gets the upper hand battling for a lose ball. Laurent Newsome (#34) boxes out in the paint. T.J. Wilson (#22) dunks early in the contest. Wilson lead Hayfield scorers with 19 points. Rebel in trouble: Sophomores Tayron Gibson (#23) and Davonte Williams double team a Fairfax player. Head  Coach Ron Palmer, staff, team and fans ponder a call against the Hawks. Even Santa Claus dropped by to take in some of the action. Junior Guard Rayshawn Rigans (#24) brings the ball up-court. Newsome flushes down two points. Junior Chad Canady (#35) pushes the ball up-court. Hawks "on the run!" Wilson is fouled, preventing a dunk. Gibson receives the ball underneath the basket and a lay-up attempt.

Hawks defeat the South County Stallions, 69-64.

Hawks jumped out to a big early lead and led the entire contest; however, foul trouble, some all around lapses combined with numerous missed free-throws, allowed the scrappy Stallions to make it a game in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, the team remained composed and went on to win their sixth straight game.

(L. to R.) Junior Chad Canady fires away from three point land. Senior Laurent Newsome swats away a Stallions' shot but is called for a foul.  A Stallion battles three Hayfield defenders for this rebound. Soph. Tayron Gibson comes down with a defensive board. Junior Brandon Winbush drives by a defender in the first quarter. Rayshawn Rigans drives to the bucket and is fouled. Winbush gets a great look at the basket and hits a three point bucket. Soph. Guard Davonte Williams is fouled by a Stallions defender. Williams pulls up for a short jumper. T.J. Wilson picks up a foul.  Wilson had to sit long stretches of the game due to foul trouble.  Without Wilson in the line-up, the Hawks struggled at times and could not find their chemistry, particularly in the second half. Gibson and Newsome due a good job of boxing out. Newsome hones his soccer skills.

J.V.

Former Hawks standout Carlos Poindexter, and now coach of the J.V. team, must be scratching his head. How can his team miss so many layups and not convert on open looks at the bucket? This was the case last night as the J.V. Hawks saw this game get away midway through the third quarter. One thing this team does not lack is hustle as was evident throughout the game. We look forward to the next game and witness improvement on the offensive side.

In OT, Freshman snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Fifteen point early lead in the game evaporates.  Leading by six points with less the two minutes remaining in the contest, the team played as if they were behind.  This led to some costly turnovers and overtime. In what can be best described as chaotic play, the teams exchanged leads during the OT period. The Hawks seemed to have pulled it out with about ten seconds left as Ben Kim calmly hit two free throws, giving the Hawks a one point lead. However, a very, very tough tough call under the host team's basket with with 1.6 seconds left gave the Stallions one last chance: in the double-bonus situation, the young man hit the two free-throws. A heartbreaking defeat for our young Hawks.  This loss was not due to the lack of hustle. Hold your heads high and come back out the next game and put it together.

(L. to R.) Under the watchful eye of coach Lindsey Maxwell, a Hawks player is doubled teamed. Ben Kim (#21) is fouled.  Kim displayed a lot of composure in key situations, particularly at the free throw line. D.J. Christian (#23) maneuvers around a defender.

Hayfield 61  Mt. Vernon 52

Hawks led the entire contest in this very tightly officiated game; Majors closed to within one point in the second half but the Hawks maintained their composure with the help of their bench to hold off the host team! Excellent effort by both teams.

(L. to R.) Senior T.J. Wilson  (#22) flushes down two of his game leading 15 points. Wilson goes airborne for a rebound. Junior Brandon Winbush (#20) contributed 14 points for the Hawks balanced offense. Junior point guard Rayshawn Rigans (#24) is the Hawks quarterback on the court. Junior Chad Cannady (#35) connects on a three point attempt. Soph. Devonte Williams (#32) and Canady hustle after a loose ball.  Junior Sean Michael King (#42) scores two of his 10 points. King and Williams provided the Hawks with a boost of the bench with King converting a number of key free throws. Vince Aylor (#44) and Tayron Gibson battle for a rebound. Canady and an opponent jockey for position.
