(Click here for digitalsports.com coverage of the game)
Sophomore Chad Canady's put-back with three seconds left, lifts Hawks to a hard fought victory! Hawks rebound from a one point loss vs. Lee and gain a tie for second place in the District.
The team, and their faithful followers, were ecstatic after the last second win over a terrific Atoms squad in a see-saw contest. The Atoms had taken a one point lead with twelve seconds left in the game before Chad Canady's heroics sealed the win for Hayfield.

Lee 55 - Hayfield 54
Lancers bucket with four seconds left in the game leaves Hawks at a loss!
A ten point half-time by the Hawks is lost in a frantic, and at times, sloppy play in the third quarter. With plenty of contact permitted, the Hawks missed numerous lay-ups in that period (Hayfield scored only six points in the quarter) allowing the Lancers to close the gap to 37-34. The Lancers continued to chip at the Hawks lead in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 51 with a minute left in the game. Hayfield could not convert on two one-one situations in the final thirty seconds which could given the advantage to the Hawks. With ten second left in the game Hayfield got the offensive rebound but a phantom call gave the Lancers possession, which lead to the winning field goal. This was undoubtedly a very, very tough call against the Hawks in light of the fact that, throughout the game, a lot of contact was permitted. A heartbreaking loss for Hayfield. Congratulations to the Lancers on their comeback win. (Notes: Hayfield was assessed a technical foul prior to the tip-off. No announcement was made for the reason (usually for dunking during the warm-ups which both teams were guilty of doing) but the Lancers converted one free throw and gained possession of the ball. Ironically, that point would be the difference in the game. Hayfield was 8-18 from the free throw line. Lee connected on five three pointers.)
(L. to R.) Junior Vincent Aylor (#43) gave the Hawks a terrific effort on the evening. Aaquil Atkins (#31) blocks a Lancer's attempt at a lay-up. Atkins led all Hawks scorers with seventeen points followed by Anthony Wilson's fifteen. A Lancer drills a big three pointer. Hawks fans come in all ages!
JV's rally from eleven points down at the end of the fourth quarter but drop a tough one at Lee, 59-58.
Leon Cureton goes up strong and is fouled.

Hawks squawk by Lake Braddock, 52-51!
Big win for Hayfield as they improve to 7-3 in district play.
Tight game all the way; LB led at the half by five points. Hawks appeared to take control in the closing seconds of the game. However, a Hayfield miscue (missed lay-up and foul) with five seconds left in the game provided some anxious moments for the fans. The Bruins converted the front-end of a free-throw, missed the second, got the rebound and missed the put-back. Sophomore Rayshawn Rigans' fourteen points led yet another Hayfield balanced scoring effort. (Note: Hayfield Head Coach Ron Palmer was unable to attend the game; get well soon Coach! Congratulations to both teams for a fine effort and to the Hayfield assistant coaches for fine job.)
(L. to R.) Sophomore Chad Canady contributed ten points for the Hawks. Senior Aaquil Atkins got into early foul trouble. Assistant A.D. Bob Bowman (far right) was terrific announcing the game in the Hawks nest. Hayfield defenders surround a Bruin. Junior Laurent Newsome fights for position. A Bruin drives past Hawks defender for a lay-up, cutting the lead to two points with 25 seconds to go in the game.
JV's lose in Double OT!
Excellent effort by both teams. Four tough calls in a ten second span in the first OT, dooms Hawks valiant effort!

Hustling Hawks propel past Potomac, 69-55!
Wilson's terrific all around play (including 22 points), leads Hawks over the Panthers.
Hayfield came into this game knowing it would be facing a highly motivated Panthers squad, seeking to redeem themselves after an earlier (Christmas) tournament setback to the Hawks. But it was the Hawks (and Anthony Wilson) who came out of the gates fast on both sides of the ball, not only matching the tempo of the Panthers but surging out to a significant lead; the Panthers could not recover as the Hawks coasted to their tenth win of the season. Hayfield lead after one quarter (24-11) and went in to the locker room up 41-25 as the Hawks guard play got the better of their Panther counterparts. Hayfield's lead fluctuated between fourteen and twenty points during the third and most of the fourth quarter. The Panthers would make a slight run cutting the Hawks lead to 11 points with four minutes left in the contest. Hayfield calmly would control the final minutes of the game ensuring the victory. Note: Hayfield was 7-9 from the charity line; Potomac went to the line 27 times and converted on 18 free-throws..
(L. to R.) Senior Guard Aaquil Atkins (first three photos) contributed seventeen points and provides Senior leadership on the court; Atkins blasts past a Panthers' defender. Sophomore Brandon Winbush represents a scoring threat anytime he gets a good look at the hoop. Junior Vincent Aylor's play gave the Hawks a big boost. Soph. Guard Rayshawn Rigans drives hard to the bucket! Hawks battle for rebound. Versatile Laurent Newsome (Honor Roll) provides the Hawks with physical play inside and is a capable ball-handler. Freshman Tayron Gibson brings plenty of energy to the Hawks when he's on the floor. Surrounded by Panthers', Wilson goes up strong

Hawks race past the Stallions, 70-58!
Led by the play of Senior Aaquil Atkins, the Hawks took control of the game late in the first quarter and led at the half, 30-21. The Stallions cut the Hawks deficit to six points early in the third quarter but could not match up well with Hayfield the rest of the way. Hayfield led at one time by twenty points in the fourth quarter. Our Hawks improve their record to 9-5 (5-3 in the Patriot District).
"Sky" Hawk! Junior Anthony Wilson (once ) again defies the laws of gravity. Sophomore Guard Rayshwan Rigans' (#32) quickness, strength and athletic ability are evident every time he steps on the floor.
(L. to R.) Hawks apply pressure but foul a Stallion. Senior Aaquil Atkins (#31) reaches for rebound. Atkins led all scorers with 23 points (including five three pointers) followed by Chad Canady and Rayshwan Rigans with 12 apiece. Soccer anyone? A stallions defender appears to be "heading" the ball behind Junior Laurent Newsome (#45). (Note: In addition to basketball, Newsome also plays varsity soccer and football a feat infrequently seen in today's high school athletics.) Soph. Guard Rayshawn Rigans elevates his game under the Hawks basket. Coach Palmer's Hawks play taller than their listed heights. Under the watchful eye of head coach Ron Palmer, Freshman Tayron Gibson tightly guards an opponent .

Tough calls thwart Hawks, as they fall at T.C. Williams, 55-51 !
Hayfield overcomes poor shooting in the first half and an early third quarter spurt by the Titans to come within seconds of the upset. Expect a barn-burner when these two athletic teams meet again at Hayfield.
(L. to R.) Senior Aaquil Atkins (#31) pushes the ball up court. Atkins, (22 points)and the Hawks, fought gallantly all the way down to the last second in this game. Anthony Wilson pressures a Titan ball-handler. Soph. Rayshawn Rigans at the charity line. (Note: Hawks were 15-22 from the free throw line; TC 19-23.)Wilson "muscles" his way inside the paint. Laurent Newsome battles for position. Brandon Winbush's field goals led to a furious Hayfield rally late in the game. A three pointer which had cut the Titans lead to 53-52 with fourteen seconds left in the game was inexplicably changed by one of the officials to a two point field goal. (Cmt: This reversal and a "no-call" on an earlier, and very obvious, Titans travel violation with 1:14 left with T.C. leading 48-47, may have kept the Hawks from pulling the upset.) Congratulations to our Hawks and the host Titans for an entertaining contest. Atkins goes up strong.
Hawks erased an eleven point Titans lead to two pints with fourteen seconds left in the game but the Titans made two pressure free throws to seal the victory.

Hawks are solid down the stretch, down West Potomac (58-52)!
In yet another tight Patriot District game, Hayfield remained poised and took control in the final minutes to earn a tough victory over a fine Wolverine squad.
(Anthony Wilson's thunder-dunk early in the first quarter put everyone on notice that the Hawks came ready to play.)
Hayfield jumped out to 16-10 first quarter lead, extended it to nine points in the second quarter and led 29-26 at the half. The resilient Wolverines charged out of the locker room, tied the game and then took the lead only to see Hayfield knotted up at 36 with three and a half minutes in the third period. The Wolverines seemed to get the upper-hand and took a three point lead by the end of the quarter. Hawks bounced back and tied the game at 42 early the final stanza. After exchanging buckets, Hayfield took the lead again (47-44) with over five minutes left; and extended the lead to five points (49-44) with four minutes and eighteen seconds left in the game. The Wolverines kept pecking away but the Hawks were able to increase their lead to seven points with less than a minute left in the contest. West Potomac didn't quit and hit a three pointer with 40 seconds left, closing the gap to four points. However, they were forced to foul and the Hawks converted on some free throws to clinch the victory. Congratulations to both teams on an exciting basketball game.
Senior Aaquil Atkins led all Hawks scorers with 19 points including some key free-throw shooting in the closing minutes. Brandon Winbush drives by an opponent.
(L. to R.) Soph. Brandon Winbush (#20) attempts a field goal from "downtown." Soph. Chad Canady (#35) gets a good look at the bucket; Canady finished with 11 points on the evening. Junior Anthony Wilson (#22) is called for goal tending. Junior Laurent Newsome attempts to tip-in an offensive rebound. Hawks Head Coach, Ron Palmer. The play was at times very physical. Senior Drew Marshall (#41) gave coach Palmer some very good minutes on the defensive side of the ball in the second half.

Hawks get off on the wrong foot, lose @ Lake Braddock, 51-42.
Junior Laurent Newsome goes up high for the tip-off.
(page updated Jan 9th - JV photos)
For most of the evening the Hawks were out of sync in tonight's match at Lake Braddock. Although holding a slight lead at the end of the first quarter, Hayfield committed at least twelve turnovers (including six traveling violations) just in that period alone; Throughout the game, Hayfield's inability to finish plays around the bucket led to their undoing. By far, the second quarter was Hayfield's best effort in the evening as they stretched their lead to seven points at intermission, 25-18. With about five and a half minutes left in the third quarter some of the lighting failed which led to a delay in the game. From that point on, it was "lights out" for the Hawks who repeatedly missed opportunities close to the basket and suffered some lapses on defense allowing the Bruin's to connect on a number of three pointers. A disappointing and frustrating loss. (Note: Hayfield did not get many calls on the offensive side of the ball during the third and fourth quarters.) Hayfield will host the Lee Lancers this coming Friday. Come on out and support your Hawks!
(L. to R.) Junior Anthony Wilson attempts a put-back for the Hawks. Hayfield struggled mightily with lay-ups (and "put-backs") particularly in the third and fourth quarters. Finishing those plays would most certainly have led to a different outcome. Rayshawn Rigans was arguably the top Hawks player in this game. Coach Palmer listens to a referee's explanation about a call that went against his team. Coaches attend an injured player late in the game.

Boys Basketball @ Mt Vernon Holiday Basketball Tournament - 12/27-29/07
Hawks valiant rally falls short against WestPo, 55-52!
(L.to R.) -Rayshan Rigans pushes the ball up court in the first half. Junior Vincent Aylor and the Hawks had their "hand full" facing a much taller opponent. Anthony Wilson slams down two of his twelve points. Rigans is fouled under the basket. Senior Aaquil Atkins led all Hawks corers with fifteen points. Chad Canady drives in for two points.
The Wolverines took advantage of very poor shooting by the Hawks, good shooting on their part and solid work inside the paint by their big man, surging out to a 14-1 lead midway in the first quarter. It was "more of the same" during the second period as the Hawks could not convert on numerous opportunities. Entering the third quarter, Hayfield trailed by twelve points and saw the deficit increase to twenty one points (43-22) midway through the period. As in the first half, the Hawks just couldn't buy a bucket, even after good ball movement and looks at the basket. That would have been the end for many teams. Nonetheless, the resilient Hawks (led by the play of Junior Anthony Wilson and Soph's guard Rayshawn Rigans and Chad Canady) continued to hustle and play aggressive defense forcing numerous turnovers by the Wolverines leading to a frantic comeback in the fourth quarter. Hayfield rallied and cut the Wolverines lead to 52-49. A three point attempt which would have tied the game was slightly deflected with less the 40 seconds remaining. The Wolverines converted three throws to seal the win. Congratulations to West Potomac and kudos to our Hawks for a terrific effort. These district foes will meet two more times during the regular season in what promises to be some exciting high school basketball.

Young Hawks get-off on the right foot, down S. County in Patriot District opener, 50-43.
Good defensive effort by our Hawks help turn back the Stallions. Hayfield's quickness on defensive forced numerous turnovers and was a key factor in the game. Although playing well in spurts, the offense appeared impatient which led to number of unforced turnovers. Hayfield lead by as many as sixteen points early in the fourth quarter before S. County made a run to cut the lead to five with about a minute left in the game. The Hawks converted a number of free throws to seal the win.
(L. to R.) Sophomore Guard Rayshawn Rigans is fouled in the closing moments of the game. Junior Anthony Wilson (#22) led all Hawks scorers with 14 points. Sophomore Tayron Gibson's (#23) package include energy and hustle.

Hawks are grounded @ South Lakes, 52-49.
Hawks bounced back from an eleven point deficit mid-way through the third quarter and took a five point lead with about four minutes left in the game. The Seahawks took advantage of a Hawks turnover and subsequent intentional foul to tie the game with under one minute to play. With 37 seconds left in the game and Hayfield holding a one point lead, an apparent bucket (and a three point lead) by Junior Laurent Newsome was negated by a very questionable foul. The Seahawks would eventually turned this play into a three point advantage. A Hawks three point attempt to tie the game at the end of regulation bounced off the rim.

Aggressive Young Hawks start out fast, lead all the way but are sluggish in the second half; hold on to defeat Fairfax 64-56.
After leading by twenty points at the end of the first-half, Hayfield's struggles with their offense and at the free throw line, allowing a hustling Rebels team to creep back into the game. Hawks Senior Guard Aaquil Atkins comes through in the clutch as he coolly knocks down his free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win. Congratulations to the Fairfax coaches and players on a terrific effort.
