Hayfield's second half surge blows them past Washington & Lee, 72-50!

With Senior Brandon Bush sitting the game out with an injury, Coach Palmer's squad picked up the slack with an exceptional team effort and had one of their better performances of the year during the second half.

Hawks see a 13 point lead crumble in the second period as the Generals took a one point lead with three seconds left in the half. That's when Senior guard Rayshawn Rigans' (12 points on the evening) two handed running shot from well beyond half-court, swished through the net sending the Hawks with the lead into the locker room.  It was all Hayfield in the last two quarters with some tvery good defense as the very unselfish team looked for the open man, particularly inside to Reggie Tate (22 points and one rattling dunk), and repeatedly thwarted the Generals defensive pressure. With Senior Brandon Bush sitting the game out with an injury, the Hawks picked up the slack  with an exceptional team effort and had one of their better performances of the year during the second half. Chad Canady (17 points) and Leon Cureton (16 points) along with Tate were the leading scorers. Junior guard Jeffrey Eskine provided the team with  quality minutes coming off the bench. Our Hawks are currently ranked number 3 in the metropolitan area by the Washington Post. Congratulations.

Junior Jeffrey Erskine (#32) dashes past a defender.  Reggie Tate on his way to getting inside position for a lay-up. Rayshawn Rigans' and the Hawks quickness created match-up problems for the Generals on both sides of the ball. A General finds himself in a bind as Reggie Tate and Leon Cureton apply pressure.

Hayfield 59 - Thomas Edison 46

Reggie Tate's inside play helps Hawks overcome a dreadful outside shooting performance. Tate's 20 points and Winbush's 19, help secure the victory over a very physical Eagles team.

(L. to R.) Senior Brandon Winbush and the Hawks overcame a very poor outside shooting night. Reggie Tate has his back to the basket; REggie used his quick moves under the bucket to counter the physical play of the eagles. Some of the Hawks faithful were dismayed at times, however, despite a poor outside shooting performance by the team the Hawks still pulled out the victory. Senior leadership, as displayed by Rayshawn Rigans have been a critical element in the Hawks run this season. Senior Reggie Tate.

Kudos to our Hawks on being ranked number five in the D.C. area by the Washington Post.  The Hawks are also ranked number two in the state of Virginia by the AP. Every game now brings the opponents best effort. So, get ready for some very tough games down the stretch!

Washington Post coverage of the game.

(L. to R.) Major trouble!  Senior Brandon Winbush finds himself in a tough spot under the Hawks basket as three Mt. Vernon defenders defend him.  Senior Sean Michael King takes a jumper. Scramble for a loose ball. Senior point guard Rayshawn Rigans; after the Majors had cut Hayfield's lead to one point (51-50) with two minutes left in the game, Rigans hit a free throw and then converted a difficult lay-up to give the Hawks a four point lead with 1:29 remaining.T(his was one of a number of huge plays for the Hawks in the final moments of the contest). Senior Chad Canady mixes it up.

The starters dominated W&L in the first quarter, building a 22-2 lead.  Hayfield substituted freely and maintained a big lead through the following 3 quarters to win 50-35.  Tate and Winbush led the scoring, but the key to the win was energetic team defense.

Winbush's 21 points paces Hawks past the Westfield Bulldogs!

Playing in a cold gym, and in front of a boisterous Westfield student body, the Hawks jumped out to an 11 point first quarter lead and were poised to rout the home team. However,  shooting wise the team went ice cold pretty much for the rest of the game.  Close officiating and some tough calls led to foul trouble for a number of Hawks which permitted the Bulldogs to get within one point midway through the 4th quarter. However, the experienced backcourt of the Hawks (led by point Guard Rayshawn Rigans) did not let the game get away as the Hawks won their fourth game of the year, 47-40. The Bulldogs are to be congratulated for a fine effort on the evening.

(L. to R.) Sr. Brandon Winbush at the charity line; Winbush hit four free throws in the final moments of the game to clinch the Hawks victory. Chad Canady slams down Hayfield's final points on the evening. Sean Michael King gets an earful from the home crowd. G.L. Cummings (#45) applies defensive pressure on a Bulldog.  Point Guard Rayshawn Rigans who never leaves the court. Under the watchful eye of Sean Michael King, Rigans attempts a free throw.

In a very physical contest, Hayfield defeats T.C. Williams, 57-49!

Hayfield jumped out to a 9-0 first quarter lead and led through most of the first half, but the Titans fought back to take a 23-21 lead at intermission. TC continued to hold the lead (primarily due to the Hawks poor free-throw shooting), going into the final quarter.  In the fourth quarter it was Reggie Tate again as the Senior's aggressive play led to a number of buckets around the board. During this time, the Hawks went on a fourteen point run to expand their lead to eleven points and secure the win.   Top scorers for the Hawks were Chad Canady with 16 points, Reggie Tate with 15 and Brandon Winbush with 14.  Senior Sean Michael King had a very strong game providing the Hawks with a huge lift on the defensive side when they most needed it. Point Guard Rayshawn Rigans (who is starting to get his basketball legs coming off a terrific football season) played a crucial role on both sides of the court in this very physical contest.

(Above) Hawks Senior Sean Michael King is boxed out by two Titan defenders. Senior Brandon Winbush. Soph. Grant Williams (#31). Rayshawn Rigans pushes the ball up court. Leon Cureton boxes out a Titan.  A Titan gets by Rigans but is about to come face to face with Reggie Tate. Tate celebrates the Hawks hard earned victory over the visiting Titans.

South County Tip-Off (Lorton)

Hayfield jumped out to a 14 point first quarter lead with a number of long three pointers by Seniors Chad Canady and Brandon Winbush; Stallions cut it to ten by the half.  After very poor shooting and some sloppy play by both teams (expected for the first game), the Stallions fought back in the third and fourth quarters and would take a two point lead with about three minutes left in the game.  That's when Senior Forward Reggie Tate came alive for the Hawks as he made three key buckets and hit a couple of free throws to help the Hawks escape with a 50-42 win.
